The Alliance for a New Immigration Consensus

About

At no other point in recent history has the need for immigration reform been greater than it is today. Simply put, the system is broken, and the Alliance for a New Immigration Consensus (ANIC) is looking to solve this problem now. The Alliance is a diverse group of leaders from the faith, business, agriculture, education, and national security communities, as well as advocates from across the political spectrum working to advance bipartisan legislative solutions on immigration reform and border security during the 117th Congress. Read the Alliance’s letter to Congress here.

ANIC  builds on two pieces of work that took shape over the course of 2021. Powerful efforts were made by a range of immigrant rights, labor and progressive organizations urging the White House and Congressional Democrats to include reforms in the Build Back Better budget reconciliation package. Simultaneously, the Center-Right Working Group (CRWG), consisting of a range of industry, faith and advocacy organizations, worked to build support for bipartisan legislative solutions that provide permanent legal protections and other reforms for Dreamers, TPS recipients, and agricultural workers.

Our goal is the enactment of incremental immigration and border security legislation. ANIC believes that reaching a legislative consensus on incremental reforms to our immigration system in the short term can lead to larger, more systemic bipartisan reforms in the future.

We call on Congress to:

  1. Provide permanent legal protections and other needed reforms for Dreamers, agricultural workers, and Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders; and
  2. Adopt a modern approach to securing the border by investing in smart border security and improving infrastructure at ports of entry. Simultaneously, Congress should focus on addressing the urgent need for secure, orderly, and compassionate processing at the border.

Over the long term, Congress must enact transformational, bipartisan, and practical reforms that promote economic growth and reflect American values. This includes addressing the broader population of undocumented immigrants and asylees and fixing the legal visa system. The time for action is now.
